The history of AutoZone

First known as Auto Shack, AutoZone started out in 1979 and has since grown into the huge chain is today. It was eventually renamed because its name was too similar to "Radio Shack".

AutoZones roots date back to just one man 

Although there are thousands of AutoZone locations today, the automobile parts and accessories store was originally started by just one man - J.R. "Pitt" Hyde III. After graduating from college, he joined his granddads wholesale food company, which was called Malone & Hyde, Inc. He started out in the specialty retailing division, and realized people could do with a place to buy parts for their cars.

But he gave this place a special touch that made his shop stand out. J.R. borrowed a trick from his grandfathers grocery stores, and made the auto parts shop clean, organized, and customer-friendly. 7 years after it opened in 1979, the store became a free-standing company.

The rest, as they say, is history! Today, AutoZone sells over $8.1 billion in car parts and accessories every year.
