The origins of Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 in Kansas by two brothers, Dan and Frank Carney, who were college studnets back then. Now, it has more than 15,000 restaurants, over 7,000 of which are in the United States. They employ more than 160,000 people.
Pizza Hut China is the chain that is most successful, where it has more of a fine dining atmosphere and a menu tailored to local tastes.
A photographer and journalist teamed up to document the new lives that former Pizza Hut buildings take on.
Pizza Hut’s buildings have a very distinctive look. From the 1970s to the 1990s, every single Pizza Hut has the same shape - but eventually, Pizza Hut decided to stop making their buildings in this shape.
Of course, not every single one of these Pizza Huts is still in business. So what happened to these unusual structures after the pizza-makers left the building?
That question is what inspired New Zealand photographer Hoi Han Tran and Australian journalist Chloe Cahill to start their “Pizza Hunt” project. Their goal is to find and photograph as many former Pizza Huts as they can. So far, Tran said, “The weirdest ones are the funeral homes and mortuaries.”
Their project was funded via Kickstarter, where it was supposed by pizza-lovers from all over the globe.
