The history of Dillards
Though Dillards is a large department store chain today, it actually used to be a small five and dime shop located in Nashville, Arkansas. The store was founded in 1938 but was sold so that its founder, William T. Dillard, could start his own department store, called Wooten & Dillard at first.
Throughout its years, Dillards has not only expanded its own stores but has also acquired stores that arent doing so well and made them part of their own brand. Their leaders showed a knack for turning around business in locations that other compnaies hadnt been able to make a profit at.
Today, there are over 330 Dillards stores across the U.S. and they employ over 21,600 people. Not too bad for a five and dime!
Dillard’s supports fundraisers for political issues.
Dillard’s department stores have been working on more than just selling clothes – they also sponsor fundraisers. In Houston, the Dillard’s Memorial City sponsored a fundraiser for a group called Heroic Media, and helped them put on a two-hour event that involved prayer sessions, lunch, and the latest spring fashions.
Heroic Media is an Austin-based media group that focuses on creating anti-abortion messages for television, billboards, and online advertising.
Despite Heroic’s focus, the Memorial City branch manager insisted that the sponsorship was not political. He said the only reason they’d agreed to sponsor the fundraiser was because another store had pulled off a successful fashion show fundraiser, and they wanted to see similar results.
The stores don’t usually make a huge profit at these types of events, but they do often end up getting what is essentially free advertising, while the fundraisers get free entertainment.
