The history of Hallmark
Hallmark was founded on January 10, 1910 in Kansas City, Missouri. Its founder was Joyce Hall, a businessman who was inspired when a traveling salesman stopped by with cards. He decided he wanted to start focusing on selling postcards, but quickly shifted his focus to the greeting card market.
The store grew over the years, and in 1928 was renamed Hallmark, which is after a symbol that goldsmiths would use to stamp their work to signify who had done it. Their own hallmark was printed on the back of all their cards.
Today, Hallmark is the biggest greeting card company in the world.
Who knew greeting cards had such an interesting history?
Just about everybody knows today that Hallmark is pretty much synonymous with greeting cards, but there are a lot of things that you may not have known about greeting cards.
For instance, did you know that they started out as a status symbol among wealthy classes? If you got a lot of cards, you were officially deemed to be socially successful. Servants passed out the cards from door to door for rich Austrian and French families for New Years Day in the Middle Ages.
Hallmark have brought some big changes to greeting cards. Before they came on the scene, greeting cards were more like postcards. They invented the folded card and stuffed the cards into envelopes, which gave their customers more space to write personal messages on the cards.
They were also innovative when they decided to display the cards on a rack, rather than in a drawer as was the norm previously.
