The history of Office Depot
The first Office Depot location was opened in Florida in 1986, where the founders envisioned a warehouse style store to sell office products. The original idea was to sell customers products in bulk at low prices, though the store no longer operates on this model.
Today, it can be found in 59 different countries. There are over 2,000 retail and e-commerce stores, and they employ around 56,000 people.
In 2015, Staples bought Office Depot in both cash and stock worth about $6.3 billion, though shortly afterwards the Federal Trade Comission had a vote and decided to block the merger.
Did you know that Office Depot has a big focus on being eco-friendly?
Office Depot makes a big effort to make its company be environmentally-friendly. They have three main principles to make it easy to remember: "Buying Green, Being Green, and Selling Green."
For "Buying", this means that they work to make their production energy-efficient. "Being" is counted as the Office Depot Green line of products that are eco-friendly, plus the certifications some of their buildings have received for being extra green. "Selling" means they make products available to their consumers that are certifiably kind to the planet.
They also offer services at their stores that help their customers make pro-environment choices, like recycling programs for used techology and printer cartridges.
