Publix is a chain of supermarkets in the United States - but its certainly not your average grocery store. In addition to having all the departments a regular grocery store would have, some Publix stores have cafes, sushi bars, liquors, and pharmacies. The history of Publix

Publix was started by George Jenkins in a modestly-sized building in 1930. In his fourth year of business, he made $120,000. Even though the Great Depression hit hard, Jenkins still managed to make his stores a success. He built the first supermarket in Florida. 

In 1945, he bought a chain of food stores called All American and re-opened them as Publix stores. The stores slowly started expanding all over Florida, and in 1991 they opened their first non-Florida Publix in Georgia. Since then, its just been onwards and upwards for Publix!

Publix holds the title not only of being one of the biggest supermarket chains in the United States, but also the largest company in the world thats owned by its employees. 

Its employees - who number around 180,000 - are collective shareholders. Once they put in 1,000 hours of work and have spent one year working for Publix, they get stock in Publix (the amount of stock is equal to 8.5% of their total pay).
