Safeway is a chain of grocery stores whose parent company is Albertsons. Safeway still operates as its own brand, and has over 1,300 stores across the United States, with about an additional 300 in Mexico. The store sells all kinds of groceries youll need to get your shopping done, from fresh produce, dairy, and meat to a bakery section, frozen foods, liquor, flowers, and more. Some Safeway locations also have a pharmacy and a photo processing center.

The history of Safeway

It all started back in 1915, when a man named Marion Barton Skeggs bought his dads grocery store. His business grew quickly, and Scaggs soon had a network of stores and had to call his five brothers in to help him expand. In 1926, there were an astonishing 428 Scaggs stores!

The store was merged with Safeway, which at the time at 322 stores. The entire operation was renamed Safeway, Inc. and operated as a cash-and-carry store. This helped people stay out of debt because they couldnt buy groceries on credit they couldnt pay back - so it was the "safe way" to shop! 

The stores headquarters are in Pleasanton, California today, and there are over 1,300 Safeway locations. 

Safeway has had a few different slogans over the years

Its normal for a company to change up its logos and slogans to keep up with the times, and Safeway has done a great job of modifying its slogans to stay relevant over the years. 

From 1972 to 1929, they had an advertising campaign with the jingle "Since Were Neighbors, Lets Be Friends." 

Starting in 1970 and going until the end of 1981, they had a campaign focusing on Safeway as a "one stop shopping center" using the slogan "Everything You Want From a Store and a Little Bit More." 

The next one was "Todays Safeway: Where You Get a Little Bit More", which was used from 1982 to 1983. It was followed by "Americas Favorite Food Store", which lasted in 1986. 

The next one was "I Work an Honest Day and I Work an Honest Deal", which was used until 1987. 

A new slogan came along in 1992, and was actually taken from a 1977 hit by Carly Simon. The slogan? "Nobody Does It Better." They used a new version by Patti Labelle for their ads.

2001 to 2005 saw the use of "Giving Our Best."

Today, they use three: "Ingredients for Life", "Fresh to Your Door", and "Its Just Better."
