There are over 370 H-E-B locations, and its ranked as one of the biggest food retailers in the entire country. They sell lots of their own-brand products, which include dairy products like milk and ice cream, snacks, bread from its bakery, and an assortment of ready-made meals you just need to open and sometime heat up. They estimate they serve more than half of the Texas market.

The history of H-E-B

Florence Butt founded a store called C.C. Butt Grocery Store in 1905 in Kerrville, Texas. When her son came back from World War I, he took over the store and expanded it. Her sons name? Howard E. Butt - his initials are the stores name today.  

H-E-B has a strong reputation for giving back 

H-E-B grocery stores are known for one thing: donating a lot to charities! This store does a whole lot to give back to their communities. 

One of the notable things they do is to donate 5% of their earnings before taxes to chairty every single year. The donations go to a range of causes, which include food banks and educiational. 

They also run a program called Excellence in Education, which has been around since 2000 and recognizes outstanding schools, teachers, and administrators throughout the state of Texas. 

On top of that, the supermarket has donated to the American Red Cross to help disaster relief efforts. This was after a fertilizer plant exploded in West, Texas. 

Unusually for stores in the United States, H-E-B did not sell alcohol and stayed closed on Sundays up until 1976. Today, it both sells alcohol and opens on Sundays.
