The history of Kroger

Founded in 1883 in Ohio, Kroger is certainly no spring chicken in the supermarket game. It all started when Bernard Kroger used his entire life savings to open up a grocery store. His approach was "Never sell anything you would not want yourself", and over 130 years later, that has definitely paid off. 

In the 1930s, it ensured it got high-quality products with quality monitoring and taste tests for customers to try out new products. In the 1950s, it expanded by acquiring supermarket chains. In the 1970s, it was the first U.S. supermarket to do formal consumer research and test out electronic scanners. 

Today, its one of the biggest companies in the entire United States.

Kroger made it into the gun control debate

The gun control debate is always a controversial issue in the United States, no matter which side of it youre on. But who knew that a supermarket could get pulled into the fray? Thats what happened to Kroger - and it wasnt because they were selling guns. 

Heres what happened. A gun control group called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America launched a campaign to get Kroger to ban customers from open carry of guns. This was because they found out that there had been over 12 shootins on a Kroger in a two-year period. 

Krogers response? They said they would obey local laws, stating, "If the local gun laws are to allow open carry, well certainly allow customers to do that...we dont believe its up to us to legislate what the local gun control laws should be." 

They also asked their customers to be respectful.
