The history of Jewel-Osco
Jewel-Osco was founded in 1899 by Frank Vernon Skiff, who partnered up quickly with his brother in law, Frank P. Ross. They originally started out selling just coffee, but expanded and became a grocery store over the years. Today, there are 185 Jewel-Osco locations in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. It is a subsidiary of Albertsons, which is based in Idaho.
Jewel-Osco was actually supposed to be a coffee service!
When Frank Vernon Skiff founded his company named Jewel in 1899, he actually sold something that wasnt groceries - instead, it was a coffee delivery service that went door to door!
It got its first change in 1902, when his brother in law Frank P. Ross joined the operation. They renamed in the Jewel Tea Company and started expanding their routes, getting up to 850 routes in 1915.
In 1929, they built a warehouse and office that also had a facility to roast coffee. They also started opening up food store divisions, and focused on opening their stores in cites and delivering to small towns. In 1932, they acquired a chain of grocery stores that pushed them towards becoming a grocery store themselves. They were called Jewel Food Stores, and they ended up merging with the Jewel Tea Company.
By 1981, they had a huge selection of items, with 10,000 general merchandise products and another 350 grocery items.
