The history of Payless

Payless ShoeSource has its roots in a company called Volume Shoe from the early 1960s, which bought out the Hill Brothers Shoe Company and turned their stores into Payless shops.

In 1979, they were acquiered by May Department Stores, which kept it unil 1996, when it was sold to shareholders. Their name officially became Payless ShoeSource in 1991.

Payless.com was launched in 1999, and the stores began selling shoes online then.

Today, there are locations in the United States, the Caribbean, Australia, Asia, and the Middle East.

Fashion website WhoWhatWear collected bizarre facts about Payless Shoes

Fashion wbsite WhoWhatWear often talks about exclusive designer collections, but they also did a fun piece that featured some "truly bizarre facts" that shoppers probably dont know about shoes in general - including some of the styles sold at Payless.

Here are a few of the ones they uncovered:

Sneakers are called sneakers because you can sneak around in them without making noise. This dates back to the late 1800s!

It was actually men, not women, who wore heels first.

The average U.S. woman has 19 pairs of shoes.

Dororthys ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz are the most expensive shoes ever. They sold for $660,000.

Right and left footed shoes didnt exist until somebody in Philadelphia came up with them.

If you dream about shoes, its said to represent how you approach life.
