The history of Burlington Coat Factory
Henrietta Milstein and her husband Monroe founded Burlington Coat Factory in 1972, when they bought an old factory oulet. Where was this old factory? In Burlington, New Jersey, of course! They started out selling jackets and coats, but started expanding their line so they wouldnt have such a big focus on seasonal outwear sales.
They opened a second location in 1975, and grew so quickly that they had 31 by 1983, the same year it went public. Today, they have over 560 stores spread out across 44 different states, as well as some in Puerto Rico, and they employ over 28,000 people.
Burlington Coat Factory raises money for good causes on a regular basis
One of the most outstanding things about Burlington Coat Factory is how charitable the company is. Theyve worked with lots of different organizations that give back over the years.
One example of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, who they have worked with since 2002 on a campaign called Light the Night. At checkout, they offer their customers the chance to donate. The fundraiser goes from July to October every year, and in total has raised more than $19 million.
They also launched a program called Warm Coats and Warm Hearts Drive in 2006. This drive collects coats for people who really need them, and its done alongside the nonprofit Fashion Delivers and the TV show Good Morning America. Theyve helped give out at least 1.2 million coats!
Recently, they joined WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease in 2012. To raise money, they have a Red Dress Event and donate $1 from every red dress sold to the foundation.
